Veggies, Containers, and Dirt…Oh My!

I found an awesome place near our house where I found heirloom plants for 50ยข a pot.

I bought a ton of various types of plants, but I had no idea what I was getting.

I listed all the plants that I bought, printed out information about them, printed out pictures, and created a notebook for myself.ย  ๐Ÿ˜€

I bought a slew of cucumber plants 4 climbing cukes, 1 bush, and 1 that I originally thought was a cucumber plant, but was actually a melon that looks and tastes like a cucumber.

I bought a lemon squash, 3 pepper plants, 8 varieties of tomatoe plants and 1 cantaloupe.

Where we live we aren’t allowed to plant anything in the ground so everything had to be potted.

I found these at the Dollar Tree…I love that place! ๐Ÿ˜€

Borrowed these nice deep planters and cages from a friend.ย  Thanks Nette! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I found some window frames at a garage sale and found the cool zebra pot for free on the side of the road. ๐Ÿ™‚

All in all, every one of the plants are doing fairly well, so I’m happy with them.ย  I bought a few herbs too and they are thriving also.

I’ll post pics as they get bigger. ๐Ÿ™‚

So now I am looking forward to eating my own homegrown veggies. Yay!ย  ๐Ÿ˜€

Happy Plantin’!

It’s that time of year again…

It’s the time of year when my brain turns toward G-rowin’ things! ๐Ÿ˜€

It's Gardenin' Time

At my new house I need to do mostly container gardening so I’m starting early looking at books for In-spi-ration…said like Spongebob with Rainbows and hearts. Lol

I’ve been going through my basement searching for my gardening books…I have books on container gardening…somewhere down there. ๐Ÿ™‚

I also recruited the help of a lovely friend who is All Green Thumbs and Garden Goodness to cast a fresh eye on my mediocre piles of outdoor accoutrements and see what magic she can work to bring some Spring renewal to my yard.

My efforts in the past have been Incredibly lack luster. ๐Ÿ™‚

With the new addition ofย  The Amazing Appearing Fence in the backyard and the disappearance ofย  The Receding Hedge Line , the yard looks a lot bigger and the fence is a huge white blank wall. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

So, hopefully next time I post some pics of the yardage it will go from yard-crud to yard-cool. ๐Ÿ˜€

Happy Springin’ !! ๐Ÿ˜€

Leapin Leap Days…

Happy Leap Day!ย  ๐Ÿ˜€

It’s a lovely day outside and I am inside enjoying the sun streaming through my windows like a cat stretched out on a windowsill. Lol ๐Ÿ˜‰

After a fun home school day with my Out of the Box group and having the Randomkids get out a ton of energy running around outside like crazykiddos, I am busy doodling, researching, and writing. Yay!

The Randomkids…sufficiently tired out… are happy and off in Gamer Land.ย  Typical teenyboppers nowadays. ๐Ÿ˜‰ย  Lol

I thanked my hubby this weekend for allowing me to doodle, write, take pics, and create to my hearts content. ๐Ÿ™‚

He laughed and said that he didn’t do anything different to “allow” me to do more, he pointed out that now at the end of my day, after home school, dishes, laundry, cooking, cleaning, and errands.ย  I actually choose to doodle, write, take pictures, and create to my hearts content instead of binge watching Netflix, binge reading books, Pinning, or otherwise surfing the net. Lolย  ๐Ÿ˜‰

I was stumped for a bit while I thought on that.ย  Wowsers!ย  How comes I never realized how much time I was sitting away. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

To which he chuckled again and pointed out that when I had my garden at my other house I was always outside and digging somewhere and planting something instead of sitting inside. ๐Ÿ˜ฎย  Shock face again…I had forgotten about that. Lolย ย  Yes, I have terrible short term, long term, and overall memory. ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜€

Yesterday, we went hiking with friends and What an Awesome Time I had!!!ย  We hiked on this cool little trail and then I took like 350 pictures. Rofl!!ย  ๐Ÿ˜€

I told them, the next time we go hiking Don’t let me bring the camera!ย  ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿ™‚

I had soooo much fun and again I thanked the hubby for being a good sport and coming along even though he had no idea when, where, or what we were doing…I set it up and had neglected to tell him till the last minute that we were doing anything…those short term memory ishes again. Lolsย  ๐Ÿ˜‰

His response was his usual chuckle followed by a few wise words. Oy Vey

He reminded me how when we were first married I Loved hiking and would get his couch potatoe butt up off the couch to go out in the woods for a walk.ย  I had forgotten all about that part of me.ย  Especially considering he is the exercise guru in the family…as far as I see it at least. Lol

Random Ponder Moment~ย  Having kids kinda changes everything in your life.ย  You spend so much time…consecutive years actually…with your mind on doing kid type things that you tend to forget all about doing You type things.

You tend to battle with yourself thinking that you need to keep doing everything for the kiddos and you just keep putting yourself on the back burner.ย  Cause it will be your time soon enough, but after awhile you tend to forget who You are. ๐Ÿ™‚

So, I am going through a new time in my life I guess and rediscovering everything I’ve forgotten about Me……..and havin’ a ton of fun along the way!! ๐Ÿ˜€

Is anyone out there in Internet Land experiencing some new directions in their life?ย  Or maybe just havin a fun time trying something new?

Write about it and leave me a link to your coolio blurb. ๐Ÿ™‚

Happy Leap to You!!ย  ๐Ÿ˜€

S-noooo-w more snow…

More Snow

More Snowโ€ฆ.Again.
Another bit of snow is sprinkling down from the heavens today.

I do like snow, but I’m Really excited for Spring. I started drawing up ideas for plantersโ€ฆ I can’t have a garden or plant anything in the ground at our current residence, but I Can have Planters!! ๐Ÿ˜€ Yay!

But, the snow isn’t helping with my cheery springy type thoughts. :/
I guess snow will help with water come summer, buuuuutโ€ฆ *sigh*
I still wish that it was spring.

At least I got some coolio pictures. That’s something. ๐Ÿ˜€
I miss our forest though, I got the Beeeest pictures Ever when we lived there. *sigh* again.ย  Thank goodness for our awesome barn. ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh, well. I’m off to draw up some more happy little flowery planter ideas. XD

I Love a Good Garden Post…

In the Garden

I Love gardening!  Currently, I don’t have an area available to garden in, but I dabble in container gardening.  Nothing like some of my pro gardening friends mind you. ;D

Even though I can’t really garden right now, I still like to keep myself in the loop about garden type activities.  I was perusing the library shelves and came across this great book called Mike McGrath’s Book of Composting.  I really enjoyed the book, in fact I’ve been keeping my eye out for it at used book sales. ๐Ÿ™‚

So, the other day I was surfing the net and stumbled across this TED Talk given by none other than Mike McGrath…

TED Talk~ Everything You Know About Composting is Wrong

Oh, my goodness!  I laughed, I cried, It moved me Bob. ๐Ÿ˜‰

What an extremely engaging, informative, and frankly hysterical speech!  It was definitely worth the watch, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

I think the lawn is laughing at me….

I think the lawn is laughing at me

Mow, Grow

Mow, Grow More.

Mow, Grow Even More.

What is this some kind of cruel joke?!

I swear the lawn is outside right this very minute laughing at us.  Mocking us with its ability to grow a full inch every half hour on the hour.  We just mowed the thing a few days ago, yet there it is, high enough to use a machete on.  I wouldn’t complain too much if we had a lawn full of luscious shag carpeted grass, but no we’ve been blessed with a lawn full of weeds, thistles, and sarlacs…not sure what they’re called, but the Randomkids nicknamed them after that giant thing that almost ate Han and Lando from the Star Wars Movie.

Anyhoo, the weeds grow thick and vigorous. :/  I’m grateful that we are not in a drought, but Really, I’d just like a wee bit of a break from the relentless cycle of lawn care. ๐Ÿ™‚

Well, I’m off to mow, before it rains and grows another 4 inches tomorrow.

What is in the water?!

what is in the water

I love our current house it’s adorable and very quaint.  It literally looks just like a barn complete with a silo. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

It’s as the kiddos would say nowadays…Totes Adorbs. ๐Ÿ˜€

Buuuut it is surrounded by more man made materials than God made ones.  Considering we moved here from a place that was more like God’s Green Acres, I’ve had to get used to the idea of container planting….no room for a garden ya see. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

So, I pulled myself up by my bootstraps got some containers from yard sales, bought a couple cans of spray paint, and voila instant be-yooootiful planters!

I bought some pretty flowers and some veggiebibbles and filled up my flower beds with planters of differing colors, shapes, and sizes.

Well, everything was going well, until we hit a bit of a dry time.  So I began watering them daily.

Now in the beginning I was watering my potted plants with the drinking water we buy.

Side note…. We buy our drinking water.  I don’t like city water, it’s bad enough it smells like a highly chlorinated pool when I take a shower and my hair looks like a victim of chemical testing…  So, I definitely Don’t drink it or cook with it.

Anyhoo, back to the story,  so the hubby noticed we were running through the water fairly quickly and spotted me watering the plants with it.  He politely asked me if I was insane, then requested that I stop using it on the plants immediately.

I began collecting rain water in buckets to water my plants with which worked well, until the before mentioned dry spell…you sort of need, oh I don’t know, Rain to collect Rain Water! :/

So, I watched the other people on the block to see how They watered their plants.  Well low and behold they were just using the good ole outside garden hose.

Well, I decided to do the same….And the results were Disastrous!!

After a mere 3 days of watering with the hose, my beautiful plants went from being vibrant, colorful, strong, happy planteez to being ugly, yellowed, wilting, sad visages of their former selves.

All I could think of was, What the heck was in that water?!

I have no idea what sort of chemical content is in our water, but if it does that to poor unassuming plant life, what is it doing to us?!

I try not to think about it too much, it gives me nightmares. Oy Vey everyone, Oy Vey.

So, I’m back to using the drinking water we buy to water my plants, sorry babe…At least until the Lord dumps some rain on us.  Then I’ll have 10 buckets sitting out in the driveway waiting to be filled with water for my poor potted plants.
